How to automatically add an address to your assets

When an asset is uploaded to Dash, information stored about that asset ("metadata") is also pulled into Dash (you can read our full article on it here). In many instances, one of these metadata fields is the GPS co-ordinates of the asset, and this can be used to make it easy to show the address of the asset when viewing it.

Adding the address field to your Dash

To show an asset's address, you should add our built-in "Address" field to your list of fields.

  1. As an admin, go to Admin > Fields

  2. Click New field

  3. Choose "Address lookup"

💡 Now's a good time to choose where in your list of fields and filters this new field will appear. Learn how in this article!

✋ Note - the address will only start populating for assets that you add to Dash after adding this field. If you would like your existing assets populated, just get in touch via the in-app chat and we can do that for you.

Viewing an asset's address

Now that you've added your Address lookup field, simply view any asset and look for the field in the metadata sidebar. If the asset contains GPS co-ordinates, the address will be shown:

What determines whether an asset has GPS co-ordinates in the metadata?

📲 Assets from smartphones: Most modern smartphones will have GPS capabilities, so as long as location services are switched on in their settings, any image or video captured on that device will have GPS co-ordinates. Of course, it's always worth checking your specific model if you're not sure.

📸 Assets from digital cameras: Some cameras have GPS capabilities, so it's worth checking your specific model.

✏️ Manual geotagging: Even if your specific device doesn't have built-in GPS, or you come across an image without GPS co-ordinates for some other reason (e.g. location services were switched off at the time), you may be able to manually geotag images by adding them to the image metadata through additional software.
