How to export asset metadata

Learn how to obtain an export of your Dash metadata

Metadata is all of the information stored in Dash about your assets, used to help you easily organise find your assets.

You can export all the metadata about your asset into one CSV file, allowing you to do certain activities like bulk updating faster than can sometimes be done within Dash.

Reasons to do a metadata export

  • Bulk update your assets: Make lots of metadata updates to a large number of assets in one go.

  • Back up your asset metadata: Download a local copy of all your asset metadata as a safeguard.

  • Migrate to a different system: If you're moving away from Dash, export your metadata to preserve all asset information for use in your new system.

What is included in a metadata export

A metadata export consists of a CSV file, readable by any spreadsheet application such as Excel or Google Sheets, containing:

  • A row for every asset in your Dash

  • A column for every custom field in your Dash

  • A column for various other system fields such as filename and file size

What is not included in a metadata export

The export does not include:

  • Assets that have been deleted and are in any user's bin

  • Assets in a user's upload area (i.e. before clicking "Done")

  • Unapproved assets

  • Embedded metadata (i.e. metadata that was embedded within the asset prior to uploading into Dash)

How to export your metadata in Dash

To export your metadata:

  1. As an admin, navigate to Admin > Import & Export > Metadata

  2. In the Export metadata section, click Generate CSV file

Dash will then prepare your metadata export file. Depending on how many assets you have, this can take some time.

Once it's finished generating, you'll then be able to download the CSV file. A link to download the file will also be emailed to you.
