How can I export all my assets from Dash?

Learn how to make a backup of your assets

Updated yesterday

You may want to export all of your Dash assets, for example if:

  • You want to create an offline backup/archive on your own systems

  • You are thinking of leaving Dash and want to move your assets to a different system (πŸ˜₯ )

(Note that as per our data security policies, we continually make regular, encrypted backups so you don't need to do your own backups if you don't want to)

What is exported

Your assets will be exported in the original format that they were updated in.

  • All metadata that was embedded in the original file when it was added to Dash.

  • The full folder structure from your Dash account.

  • Files will be exported using their original file name, unless multiple identically-named files exist in the same folder, in which case we will prepend the asset ID to each of the files to ensure each file has a unique filename.

  • Assets in all users' bins

  • Assets submitted for approval but not yet approved

What is not exported

  • Previous versions of assets

  • Custom metadata (fields) you've created and stored against your assets. To obtain this, request a metadata export.

Performing an export from Dash

All of our Dash exports are conducted using Amazon S3. This is a cloud-based storage location.

If you're exporting assets as a one-off, we can create a temporary S3 bucket for you and then provide you with the credentials once the export is complete.

Accessing your exported assets

Once we've completed the export, you can access your assets in various ways. This article explains how to access your bucket from your desktop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do assets in multiple folders get exported to?

For assets that are stored in multiple folders, we'll export each asset to the deepest folder path we find.

For example, if asset desk01.jpg is stored in the folders /products/desk and /marketing/promo/campaign1, the asset will be placed in /marketing/promo/campaign1 in the export bucket.

Note that our metadata export does include all the paths an asset is contained in, so you can retain this information for future reference if desired.

Can I do regular exports for backup purposes?

We already backup all of our customer data on a regular basis, which you can read about in our security overview article.

If you would still like your own backup done on a regular basis, we can help you as follows:

  1. Ensure you have created your own S3 bucket in an AWS account you control - we cannot provide S3 buckets for regular backup purposes

  2. Get in touch when you'd like us to do an export into the bucket for you and we will do it for you

Please note we can only run exports for regular backup purposes a maximum of once every 3 months.
