With our WordPress plugin, you can browse and search your Dash assets directly from within WordPress and import them into your pages and into your media library, all without leaving WordPress.

This page explains how to install, configure and use the integration.

Plugin availability

Our plugin is available on self-hosted instances of WordPress (wordpress.org).

The plugin works on both the new block editor (Gutenberg) and the classic editor.

If the Dash plugin is already installed in your WordPress, skip down to "Using the plugin" below.

Setting up the plugin

1. Enable the integration in Dash

Go to Admin > Integrations and scroll down to the WordPress section.
Click "Configuration options".
Enter your Wordpress admin page URL e.g. https://www.my-wordpress-site.com/wp/wp-admin
Leave this screen open as you'll need the Client ID and Secret Key when you configure the integration in WordPress shortly.

2. Install the Dash Wordpress plugin

In your WordPress admin, click Plugins, then click the "Add new" button
Search for "dash digital asset management" and press Enter
You should now see the Dash plugin - click "INSTALL"
Once complete, click "ACTIVATE"

Once successfully installed, you should see Dash as a new menu item at the bottom of the main sidebar:

3. Enable auto-updates

We strongly recommend you enable automatic updates for the Dash plugin, so that you are always on the latest version. This will mean you get the fastest access to new features, and also bug fixes as and when they are released.

Go to the Plugins > Installed Plugins sidebar menu
Click "Enable auto-updates" next to the Dash plugin

4. Configure the plugin

Click the Dash menu item in the main WordPress sidebar.
Here you enter three things:
1. Your subdomain e.g. https://yoursubdomain.dash.app (the bit in bold - "yoursubdomain" in this example, not the full URL)
2. The Client ID that you obtained earlier (see "Enable the integration in Dash" above)
3. The Secret Key that you obtained earlier (see "Enable the integration in Dash" above)
Click "Authenticate with Dash" and follow the usual steps to login to your Dash.
Your Dash is now connected to your WordPress!

ℹ️ Each Wordpress account connects to one Dash account. All your WordPress users of the plugin will be able to see any assets that the user you logged into Dash has permissions to view (in the final step above).

Using the plugin

Add a new block using either the "➕" button in the top menu, or from the ➕ button on a new line.
Choose "Image"
In the image selection box that appears, choose "Insert Media from Dash"
You will now be able to browse all of your Dash assets.
Use the search bar to search for any information about your assets that you know, or just scroll to browse.
Select the desired image, and choose from any preset sizes that you have already created in Dash, if you don't want to import the full size original image.
Press Select to insert the image into your page.

You now have access to all the usual inline image editing tools that WordPress provides. The image has now been imported into your WordPress media library and is available to use again.

Mapping fields from Dash to WordPress

When you use the plugin to search for an image in Dash, we will automatically look for the following fields in Dash pull through any data found into their corresponding fields in WordPress:

Title
Description
Alt text
Caption

If you use any of these fields in WordPress and want to have them populated from data in Dash, just make sure the fields in Dash use the same name as listed above.

Frequently asked questions

If I upload a new version of an asset to Dash, will that update the asset I previously added to WordPress?

No, when you upload an asset to WordPress via the Dash plugin, WordPress uploads a copy of that asset to the WordPress media library. This becomes a separate asset in WordPress and is not linked to Dash in any way.

Does the WordPress plugin work with any 3rd party apps?

The plugin works with the following known 3rd party plugins:

WooCommerce, version 7.6 or greater
Advanced Custom Fields

Theoretically, the plugin should be compatible with any other plugin that uses the standard WordPress media window for image selection. If your plugin does use this but the Dash plugin isn't working, please check your WordPress error logs to see if you have any customisations that are interfering. If so, feel free to get in touch and we'll gladly investigate to see if there's anything we can do to help.

How do I add an image using a crop preset?

When inserting an asset using the plugin, you can choose from your existing Dash preset sizes. The plugin supports both resize and crop presets.

In order to use a crop preset, you need to first predefine the crop area for that particular asset in Dash. Once you've done that, the crop preset will appear in the Size menu in the insert image sidebar:

Troubleshooting

Verify you are on the latest version of the plugin, by going to Admin > Plugins > Installed Plugins. Here you will see a message if you are not on the latest version of the plugin. We also recommend you enable auto-updates from this screen.
