What is metadata

Metadata is all information we store about your digital assets. It can include core information such as image dimensions and file size, as well as optional information such as custom field information you've added.

Dash uses metadata to help find assets when you do a search or apply a filter.

Types of metadata in Dash

  • System metadata — Fundamental information about the asset, such as filename, file type, and file size

  • Embedded metadata — Additional information stored within the file itself, saved to it at the point of creation or editing. E.g. an image editor might save the colour profile and software used. A photographer editing images in Photoshop might save their name as an embedded field as well to help identify the source of the image in future.

  • Custom metadata — Dash uses custom fields to help you organise and find your assets using information specific to your business and needs. For example, project name, year of campaign, usage rights etc. These fields are saved only in Dash and not embedded into your assets.
